Women in Maritime Security and Safety

On August 21, 2024, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Offshore Patrol Vessel Sujay, complete with an integral helicopter, made a noteworthy port call in Jakarta, Indonesia, marking the beginning of a two-day visit as part of its ongoing deployment to East Asia.

In a pioneering move, two female ICG officers are onboard Sujay for this deployment, representing 'Women in Maritime Security and Safety.' Their mission includes engaging in bilateral cooperative efforts and participating in various activities designed to strengthen maritime relations.

Throughout the visit, the Sujay crew will partake in professional exchanges focused on Marine Pollution Response, Maritime Search and Rescue, and Maritime Law Enforcement. The itinerary also includes collaborative activities with the Badan Keamanan Laut Republik Indonesia (BAKMALA), such as cross-deck training, joint yoga sessions, friendly sports events, and a Passage Sea Exercise.

In addition, ten NCC cadets aboard ICGS Sujay will join a walkathon aimed at combating marine plastic pollution, partnering with local youth organizations. This initiative supports the Government’s ‘Puneet Sagar Abhiyan’ and enhances international outreach.

The ICG's visit underscores the ongoing commitment to maritime cooperation, following the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with BAKAMLA on July 6, 2020. This deployment aligns with the ICG’s dedication to fostering bilateral relationships and bolstering collaboration with key maritime agencies, which is vital for ensuring the safety, security, and environmental sustainability of regional seas while addressing contemporary maritime challenges.
