Sweden’s Journey and Achievements within the EU.

Thirty years ago, Sweden joined the European Union, marking a significant milestone in the nation's history. This was an important achievement for the Nordic country, which has since made invaluable contributions to the Union. Over the years, Sweden has exemplified the core values that the EU stands for, including democracy, gender equality, social inclusion, and fundamental rights. As a result, Sweden has become an integral part of the European community, opening doors for millions of Swedes to work, study, and travel across the continent. In today’s uncertain world, Sweden’s contributions to EU security have proven essential, strengthening the Union as a whole.

Sweden’s Role in Strengthening European Values

Sweden’s EU membership has enabled the country to play an active role in promoting key European values. As a staunch advocate of democracy, gender equality, and social inclusion, Sweden’s influence is felt across the EU. The nation has consistently championed fundamental rights, contributing to EU policies that reflect its progressive values. Sweden's commitment to these ideals has strengthened the European Union and its role as a global leader in promoting peace, human rights, and equality.

Sweden’s Economic Prosperity through EU Membership

Joining the EU has also brought significant economic benefits to Sweden. The country's economy has flourished within the Single Market, benefiting from trade agreements and cross-border investments. Sweden’s export-dependent industries have thrived, thanks to access to the EU market and its numerous opportunities for growth. Since joining the EU, Sweden has seen a remarkable increase in its GDP over 85% and its real economy has grown by leaps and bounds.

The EU has also been instrumental in funding Sweden’s agricultural sector. The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) has provided over €24 billion in support to Swedish farmers, ensuring a prosperous and sustainable agricultural industry. Additionally, Sweden's citizens have seen tangible improvements in their quality of life, with a 31% increase in employment since 1995.

Environmental Leadership and Sustainability

Sweden’s EU membership has allowed the country to champion environmental causes on a larger scale. Sweden has consistently advocated for clean technologies and sustainable development, demonstrating that economic growth and environmental protection can go hand in hand. The nation’s commitment to climate change action has resonated throughout the EU, with Sweden playing a key role in shaping policies that address climate change, biodiversity, and environmental preservation.

A focal point of Sweden’s environmental advocacy has been the protection of the Baltic Sea, with the country pushing for greater attention to its unique ecosystem and marine life. Through its leadership in the EU, Sweden has helped secure stronger environmental protections and policies aimed at safeguarding the region’s future.

Education and Mobility: Expanding Opportunities for Swedes

The EU has also played a vital role in broadening educational and mobility opportunities for Swedish citizens. Since joining the Union, more than 105,000 Swedes have participated in the Erasmus+ program, furthering their studies in various European countries. This program has not only fostered cultural exchange but has also allowed Swedish students to gain valuable international experience that enhances their future careers.

Furthermore, Sweden’s EU membership has made it easier for Swedes to travel, work, and study across Europe, contributing to a sense of European unity and cooperation.

Impact on Sweden’s Regional and Local Development

Sweden has directly benefited from the EU’s support in rural, coastal, and regional areas. Since 1995, the Union has funded various development projects, including investments in fisheries and aquaculture. Through €353 million in EU funding, Sweden’s fishing industry has grown, creating jobs and supporting sustainable practices. These investments have not only benefited Sweden’s economy but have also helped to bridge the gap between urban and rural areas, ensuring that the benefits of EU membership are felt throughout the country.

Infrastructure and Cross-Border Cooperation: The Øresund Bridge

One of the most iconic symbols of Sweden’s EU membership is the Øresund Bridge, which connects Sweden to Denmark. Completed in 2000, the bridge was a major infrastructural project that cost €8.4 billion and received significant funding from the European Investment Bank. The Øresund Bridge has become much more than an economic asset; it represents a link between EU citizens, facilitating daily travel and commerce between Sweden and Denmark. Every day, about 100,000 people cross the bridge, making it a critical part of cross-border cooperation and a testament to the success of EU integration.

Sweden’s Lasting Impact on the European Union

Sweden’s EU membership has undoubtedly strengthened the country, while also enriching the Union as a whole. Over the past thirty years, Sweden has contributed to the EU’s success through its commitment to core values, economic growth, environmental leadership, and regional development. The positive changes brought about by Sweden’s membership are a testament to the power of European cooperation. Looking ahead, Sweden’s continued contributions will play a vital role in shaping the future of the European Union.

Excerpts from the Statement of Government EU Policy by PM Ulf Kristersson in the Swedish Parliament on 13 November.

"Against the current geopolitical backdrop, many countries are turning inward. But the past 30 years have taught us that we are not as strong on our own. On the contrary, more cooperation builds a stronger and more resilient Europe.

A small country such as Sweden, with an open and trade-dependent economy, understands the importance of the EU. Exports account for half of our overall economy. And three quarters of our overall international trade is conducted in the EU internal market. This involves a total of SEK 4 250 billion. And almost 850 000 Swedish jobs depend on exports alone."  He added, "We must be proactively work and cooperate wholeheartedly in both the EU and NATO. We have to go all-in. Seek like minded allies at an early stage of proceedings. And use our seat at the table to actively defend and pursue Swedish national interests."

"The task of safeguarding Sweden still rests with us. But now more than previously, we are also safeguarding our country’s economy, security and global influence in close cooperation with others." said Ulf Kristersson.
