Colombo April 5, 2025

PM Modi was conferred with the prestigious “Sri Lanka Mitra Vibhushana”, the highest civilian award Sri Lanka bestows upon foreign leaders.

This honour, presented during his official visit to Colombo, recognizes PM Modi’s unwavering commitment to strengthening the bond between India and Sri Lanka.

Ceremony and Symbolism

It was handed over by Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayaka at a ceremonial state function that was attended by dignitaries, cabinet members, diplomats, and media personnel.

"Sri Lanka Mitra Vibhushana" reflects profound gratitude towards leaders who have shown exemplary friendliness and support towards Sri Lanka. Prime Minister Modi echoed his sincere appreciation, affirming that the honour is not only personal but also a recognition of 1.4 billion Indians.

He asserted that the award testifies to the mutual respect and the historical connection between the two neighbouring countries. This is a moment of pride not only for me, but for all Indians. This award strengthens the centuries-old bond between our peoples and is a reflection of our common vision for peace, prosperity, and unity," Modi stated.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

Strategic Energy Cooperation

One of the most significant events during the visit was the co-launch of a 120 MW solar power plant in Sri Lanka's eastern province. This is a development built in collaboration with India and is a milestone achievement in energy cooperation and underscores India's role in advancing sustainable energy solutions within the region. The project fits both countries' ambitions to move towards cleaner, greener energy sources, and illustrates India's ongoing commitment to meeting Sri Lanka's energy requirements.

Defence and Security

Agreements India and Sri Lanka also exchanged new defence cooperation pacts, a landmark moment in regional security and diplomatic partnership. Both leaders recognized the significance of a secure Indian Ocean Region and committed to cooperate to promote peace, maritime security, and defence modernization. Prime Minister Modi emphasized the significance of Sri Lanka's geographical location and appreciated President Dissanayaka's appreciation of India's essential security interests.

Economic and Cultural Cooperation

Aside from energy and defence, the two nations also discussed ways of strengthening economic relations, especially in the areas of trade, tourism, and infrastructure. India reiterated its assistance to Sri Lanka's post-crisis economic revival through credit lines, investments in strategic sectors, and greater market access. The two heads of state also touched upon the importance of cultural and people-to-people ties. With common religious heritage, linguistic affinities, and historical connections, India and Sri Lanka are well placed to further their civilizational cooperation in fields of education, cultural exchanges, and tourism efforts.

A Vision for the Future

This trip and the award ceremony are more than diplomatic nicety—it is a reassertion of a vision for a more united, stronger South Asia. Both Sri Lanka and India are dedicated to regional stability, sustainable development, and inclusive growth. By awarding Prime Minister Modi the Sri Lanka Mitra Vibhushana, the country has made a strong statement of friendship, respect, and common future. With India remaining a leading player in regional diplomacy, this award serves to further consolidate the special relationship between the nations.

Conclusion

Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Sri Lanka in April 2025 and the prestigious award he received mark a significant chapter in Indo-Lankan relations. Through strategic agreements, collaborative energy ventures, and mutual diplomatic respect, the foundation for a robust and forward-looking partnership has been laid.
