India Joins UN-Led Conference on Afghanistan Dedicated to Improving the Lives of Afghan People

India Joins UN-Led Conference on Afghanistan in Doha India is among 25 countries participating in the third UN-led conference on Afghanistan, held in Doha. This crucial gathering aims to find ways to improve the lives of the Afghan people under Taliban rule. The conference complements previous efforts, such as the Delhi Regional Security Dialogue on Afghanistan and the Moscow Format consultations.

The conference also provided a platform for the Taliban to position themselves as the sole representatives of Afghanistan, a role they assumed after returning to power in 2021 following a prolonged insurgency against the U.S.-backed government.

Significance of a Peaceful and Stable Afghanistan for the Region and India:

Regional Connectivity: Afghanistan serves as a gateway to the Central Asian region, enhancing regional connectivity.

Security: Reduced insurgency and cross-border terrorism can lead to a more secure environment for India's northern and western borders. Conversely, an unstable Afghanistan may become a safe haven for terrorists.

Energy and Resources: Stability in Afghanistan could pave the way for the Turkmenistan–Afghanistan–Pakistan–India (TAPI) pipeline, crucial for regional energy security.

Curbing Drug Trafficking: A stable government in Afghanistan can better tackle drug trafficking. Afghanistan, along with Pakistan and Iran, is part of the "Death Crescent." Indian states like Punjab are highly affected by drug trafficking.

India-Afghan Relations Post-Taliban Takeover:

While India has not officially recognized the Taliban, it continues to support the Afghan people through various means:

Humanitarian Aid: India has supplied several shipments of humanitarian assistance, including wheat, medical aid, and earthquake relief.

Education: India continues its Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) scholarship scheme for Afghan students, ensuring access to education.

Trade and Commerce: Trade between the two countries is ongoing, facilitated by routes like the Chabahar port.

Technical Assistance: An Indian technical team in Kabul monitors the status and functioning of projects built by India, ensuring their continued operation and benefit to the Afghan people.

India's participation in the UN-led conference underscores its commitment to a peaceful and stable Afghanistan, which is crucial for regional security, connectivity, and development.
