India has officially joined the Eurodrone programme as an OCCAR Observer State, marking a significant step forward in strengthening collaboration between India and Europe in the aerospace and defence sectors. The announcement was made during a meeting between Joachim Sucker, Director of the OCCAR (Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation) - EA, and Ambassador Ajit Gupte at the Embassy of India in Berlin on January 21, 2025.
During the meeting, Sucker handed over the letter of approval for India’s Observer State status in the MALE RPAS (Eurodrone) programme. This development opens the doors for India’s active participation in one of Europe’s most advanced aerospace and defence initiatives. The Eurodrone programme is led by Airbus Defence, in collaboration with Leonardo and Dassault, and is focused on the development of Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS).
India's inclusion as an OCCAR Observer State represents a pivotal moment for bilateral aerospace and defence cooperation between India and Europe. The status provides India with an opportunity to engage in discussions, share expertise, and contribute to the development of the Eurodrone programme, which has the potential to enhance global security capabilities.
The collaboration is set to pave the way for future partnerships in defence technology and research, creating avenues for India to further modernize its defence capabilities while fostering stronger ties with European countries in the defence and aerospace sectors.
Looking Ahead: A Stronger India-Europe Defence Partnership
This development not only strengthens India’s role in the global aerospace industry but also marks a deeper commitment to expanding its strategic partnerships with European nations in cutting-edge defence technologies. As the collaboration unfolds, both India and Europe stand to benefit from shared innovation, research, and advancements in the defence sector.
India’s participation in the Eurodrone programme is expected to be a significant driver of future opportunities in military aviation and aerospace, with potential for joint ventures, technology transfer, and greater integration between Indian and European defence industries.
