India recently hosted the 3rd Voice of Global South Summit (VOGSS), continuing its role as a key advocate for the countries often labeled as “developing” or “less developed.” This summit, which took place in August 2024, aimed to bring together nations from the Global South to discuss and address a wide range of issues under the theme “An Empowered Global South for a Sustainable Future.”
The Global South refers to countries that face various developmental challenges and are typically separated from the Global North, which includes wealthier nations. The Brandt Line is a conceptual boundary that divides these regions, with the Global North being more economically advanced compared to the Global South.

2. Global Development Compact (GDC): India proposed the GDC to address concerns about debt and development finance. This initiative aims to create a framework focusing on trade for development, sustainable growth, and technology sharing among Global South countries. 3. Financial Commitments: India announced significant financial contributions to support the Global South. A special fund of $2.5 million will be set up to promote trade activities, and a Trade Policy Training Fund of $1 million will be established for capacity building. These funds are intended to enhance trade practices and support economic growth in participating countries.
Challenges Faced by the Global South
During the summit, several challenges faced by the Global South were highlighted:
• Outdated Global Governance: The existing global governance structures and financial institutions often fail to address the needs and realities of Global South countries effectively.
• Technology Divide: There remains a significant technology gap between the Global North and South, hindering development and innovation in many countries.
• Security Issues: Terrorism, extremism, and separatism continue to pose serious threats, impacting stability and progress in various regions.
India’s Advocacy for the Global South
India has shown a strong commitment to supporting the Global South through various initiatives:
1. Social Impact Fund: India will contribute $25 million to accelerate the development of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) in Global South countries. This fund aims to enhance digital connectivity and capabilities, crucial for modern development.
2. Global South Young Diplomat Forum: A new forum has been launched to promote education and capacity building among young diplomats from Global South countries. This initiative seeks to empower the next generation of leaders and enhance diplomatic skills.
3. African Union in G20: During its G20 Presidency, India advocated for the induction of the African Union as a permanent member. This move reflects India’s commitment to increasing the representation and influence of African nations in global economic discussions.
4. Vision of Aarogya Maitri: Under the mission “One World-One Health,” India aims to improve health security globally. Initiatives like the Jan Aushadhi Kendras in African and Pacific Island countries exemplify this vision by providing affordable medicines and healthcare solutions.
