IAF Contingent at Exercise Red Flag 2024: Enhancing Global Aerial Combat Proficiency

From June 4 to June 14, 2024, an Indian Air Force (IAF) contingent participated in Exercise Red Flag 2024 at Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska, hosted by the United States Air Force. This exercise, the second edition of its year, is renowned as an advanced aerial combat training event held quarterly by the USAF.

The multinational exercise saw the participation of not only the IAF but also the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF), Royal Air Force (RAF) of the United Kingdom, Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF), German Luftwaffe, and the host, the US Air Force (USAF).

The IAF contingent brought their Rafale aircraft, complemented by a team of aircrew, technicians, engineers, controllers, and subject matter experts. Facilitating the transatlantic journey of the Rafale fighters were IL-78 Air-to-Air Refuellers (AAR), while C-17 Globemaster aircraft handled the transportation of personnel and equipment.

This marked the debut of IAF Rafale aircraft in Exercise Red Flag, where they collaborated closely with RSAF and USAF F-16s, F-15s, and A-10 aircraft. The exercise scenarios encompassed Beyond Visual Range (BVR) combat exercises within Large Force Engagements (LFE), focusing on Offensive Counter Air and Air Defence roles.

Notably, IAF crew members actively participated in mission planning and even assumed roles as Mission Leaders for specific exercises throughout the duration of the exercise.

Despite the challenging Arctic weather conditions, including near-zero temperatures, the IAF maintenance crews displayed exceptional dedication, ensuring the operational readiness of all aircraft. This commitment enabled the successful execution of over 100 sorties during the exercise period, demonstrating the IAF's capability and readiness in diverse and demanding operational environments.

The participation of the IAF in Exercise Red Flag 2024 underscores India's commitment to enhancing global aerial combat proficiency and fostering international cooperation in defense and security matters. This collaborative endeavor not only strengthens interoperability among participating air forces but also contributes significantly to advancing strategic partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond.
