The Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade) recently hosted a first-of-its-kind event, the Festival of Australia, in India marking a significant milestone in the growing relationship between Australia and India. This unique event brought together Australia's top universities, retail partners, and premium food and beverage (F&B) products, offering an unparalleled platform to showcase the best that Australia has to offer to Indian consumers.

The Festival of Australia served as a dynamic platform for engagement between Australia’s prestigious institutions and Indian students. It provided an invaluable opportunity for students and parents to interact directly with representatives from Australian universities, discuss various course offerings, and explore educational opportunities that can help them achieve their career and learning aspirations.

A Celebration of Australian Education and Premium F&B Products

One of the festival's key highlights was the Australian Food Pavilion, which featured a curated selection of Australia’s premium food offerings. From high-quality honey to succulent lamb, the pavilion showcased the diverse range of Australian produce. The event gave Indian consumers a chance to experience the unique flavors of Australian food products, known for their excellence and sustainable production methods.

Education and cultural exchanges between India and Australia have been steadily growing, and the festival exemplified how both countries are nurturing stronger ties through academic collaboration and trade. The festival traveled across four major cities—Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Kochi—bringing Australian excellence to India’s food and education sectors.

Australian Lamb: The Star of the Festival

A major focal point of the festival was Australian lamb, which was featured prominently in various cooking demonstrations and culinary events. Austrade partnered with some of the finest chefs from renowned hotels such as ITC Hotels, Marriott Hotels, Shangri-La Group, and the Taj Hotels to showcase the versatility of Australian lamb. These celebrated chefs crafted a wide variety of dishes, including slow-roasted racks, delicate cutlets, and rich curries, each designed to highlight the natural flavor, tenderness, and richness of Australian lamb.

Australian lamb has become a favorite among chefs globally, and its presence in the Indian market has gained significant traction. Australia is the largest exporter of lamb in the world, producing over 700,000 tons annually and accounting for 30% of global lamb exports. Known for its consistent quality, ethical farming practices, and sustainable production methods, Australian lamb is now available in India at zero import duty, thanks to the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement.

As India is the world’s second-largest consumer of goat meat, the introduction of Australian lamb to the Indian market has been met with enthusiasm. The succulent taste and high-quality meat offered a new culinary experience for Indian diners, who embraced the rich flavors of Australian lamb in a variety of regional dishes.

Educational Collaboration and Industry Partnerships

In addition to the food showcase, the Festival of Australia included insightful panel discussions that brought together senior representatives from Indian schools, Australian universities, and industry partners. These discussions focused on understanding what prospective students truly seek from foreign universities and how Australia can offer them an enriching academic experience. The conversation also explored the growing demand for international education and how Australian universities can continue to meet the diverse needs of Indian students.

Austrade also expanded the reach of the festival by collaborating with JioMart Digital, one of India's leading e-commerce platforms, to set up an Australia Pavilion that displayed a variety of Australian products. In partnership with Hyderabad-based Q-Mart Retail Limited, the festival allowed guests to explore and purchase premium Australian products online, further strengthening trade ties between Australia and India.

Cultural Exchange and Cross-Border Appreciation

The Festival of Australia was more than just an event to showcase Australian products and services—it was a celebration of the growing cultural and economic ties between the two nations. By highlighting Australia’s world-class education offerings and premium food products, the festival underscored the shared commitment to cross-cultural appreciation, collaboration, and growth.

In Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Kochi, guests not only had the chance to taste exquisite Australian dishes but also learned about sustainable practices in food production and the importance of ethical sourcing. These conversations about quality, sustainability, and culinary excellence are vital in promoting long-lasting partnerships and mutual respect between the two nations.

As the Festival of Australia ends this year, it leaves behind a legacy of strengthened trade, educational ties, and cultural exchange between Australia and India. This event has set the stage for further collaboration in areas ranging from education and retail to food and agriculture. The Festival of Australia continues to build momentum, celebrating the rich cultural and economic bonds between Australia and India.

Speaking about the festival in Mumbai, John Southwell, Senior Trade and Investment Commissioner—South Asia, Australian Trade and Investment Commission, saidWith this event, we hope to increase awareness and open new opportunities for Indian students, families, and food enthusiasts to discover Australia as a premier location for top-notch education and fine dining experiences.”
